Through his innate curiosity and dedication to excellence, Leonardo was the first to discuss viticulture and oenology with precision and expertise. What we have inherited lives on every day in Leonardo da Vinci wines.
The Genius’s passion for oenology was born during his adolescence when, together with his uncle Francesco, he directly experienced the harvest and wine production in the Vinci territories. In matters of oenology, Leonardo was a true pioneer: thanks to his innate curiosity and propensity for excellence, the Genius was the first to speak of viticulture and oenology with precision and technical expertise.
What we have inherited lives anew every day in the vineyards, in the work and in the wines of Leonardo da Vinci Spa.
The Letter to the Farm Manager of 1505 is considered the first treatise on oenology in history, aimed at optimising grape cultivation and wine production.
Five centuries later, oenologists and expert technicians at Leonardo da Vinci Spa have recovered the qualitative observations contained in the missive: the Genius’s technical indications reveal all of his passion for wine and the modernity of his insights. Leonardo understood how to obtain quality wines through careful observation of natural phenomena that lead to the maturation of the grape and through the invention of techniques and instruments to optimise vinification and ageing.
Leonardo da Vinci Spa has developed a technical and cultural project drawing inspiration from the Genius’s studies to produce wines that he himself would be proud of. The Leonardian observations, taken up by our technical, agronomic and oenological staff, are never static and final. The constant pursuit of perfection and of new methodologies in viticulture, vinification and ageing has led us to reinterpret and integrate the Genius’s treatises, continuing his work to obtain the most “Divine liquor of the grape“. The objective is to rediscover, recover and continue the Genius’s scientific research in the field of oenology, in order to bring to life the modern version of his method.
The Leonardo Method® represents the formalisation of a production protocol – exclusive and proprietary – used for the wines of all Leonardo da Vinci collections. In keeping with Leonardo’s creative and visionary approach, the Method is in constant evolution thanks to the dedication and expertise of our oenologists.
Each year a document is drawn up containing the technical guidelines to be followed and defining the parameters for continuous monitoring of all vinification phases, from the vineyard to bottling, to ensure the quality of the final product.
The Leonardian approach and the constant pursuit of perfection is reflected in the quality of the Wines Inspired by Genius, such as Toscana IGT Rosso from the Leonardo da Vinci Collection: a balanced and well-proportioned wine – like the Vitruvian man shown on the label.
This red wine is an expression and narrative of its region of origin: the red grapes that compose it, principally Sangiovese, come from the vineyards of Vinci and neighbouring municipalities. In these vineyards particular techniques of natural soil fertilisation and vine nutrition systems are employed.
Our oenologists pay particular attention to the vineyard’s exposure characteristics and to the aeration of the leaves and grape bunches. The grapes are usually harvested between 20 September and 10 October, after careful monitoring of quality aspects.
After harvesting, the grapes are made into red wine and then fermented at controlled temperature. To be made using the Leonardo Method®, a wine must follow a specific protocol also during vinification and ageing phases: the various stages of these phases impart to the wine an intense and persistent fruit, enhancing the wine’s fragrance. The Leonardian approach continues also during bottling, where particular steps are followed to measure certain specific parameters.
The care and attention to detail applied in all phases of the Method allows us to obtain an excellent red wine that reveals unexpected nuances of Tuscany. Leonardo da Vinci Toscana IGT Rosso displays intense aromas on the nose with notes of dark fruit, whilst on the palate it reveals great softness with a long and persistent finish. This red wine is the ideal accompaniment for first courses with meat-based sauces, lasagne, fresh cheeses and cured meats.
