La Monnalisa di Leonardo da Vinci

Monnalisa

The origins of the project

Leonardo da Vinci is the ultimate expression of knowledge, research, experimentation, science and art.

Bearing his name means sharing not only his values but also his philosophy, centred on studying the territory and research. And it is with this awareness that, since its foundation in 1961, Leonardo da Vinci Wineries has set itself the goal of valorising the production of its members' vineyards through practices aimed at the pursuit of quality, both in oenological and agronomic terms.

The wines

The choice of members was based on: the vocation of the land for quality production (pedoclimatic characteristics, vineyard yields) and wines that can express grapes and wines with contemporary style and character (low acidity, concentration, extraction), as well as the member's propensity for production improvement.

The Monnalisa project adds art to this research: through a strong bond between technicians, winemakers and natural elements, it produces wines of quality with contemporary style, in full respect of the characteristics of the selected territories and 'dresses' them by transforming the bottles into artworks. Universal and timeless art, like Leonardo's work.

Contemporary, since 1503

The Monnalisa wine bottles are conceived as a tribute to the 'Genius' and, in particular, a tribute to his most celebrated, most viewed and most known work.

Leonardo da Vinci Winery organised a contest for the design of the Monnalisa wine bottles. Artists of every specialty, from street art to tattoos, from photography to painting, were involved to create their own interpretation of the Gioconda. The artist selected to reinterpret the Monnalisa is New Yorker Ian Henderson. A photographer, graffiti artist and graphic designer with a strong penchant for portraits, in recounting his relationship with Leonardo's work, he states:

'Leonardo da Vinci's legacy and work have always encouraged me to share ideas through my unique style, learning and growing along the way.'

A special printing technique

The traditional paper wine label has been replaced by a special screen printing technique, performed directly on the glass of the bottle, with a tactile 'raised' effect that emphasises the artwork, making it almost concrete and real.
