Leonardo and his journey through Romagna: discover the Mappa di Imola wine

Leonardo da Vinci e il viaggio in Romagna: scopri il vino Mappa di Imola

In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned by Cesare Borgia to examine and improve the infrastructure and fortifications on the territory of the Duchy of Romagna.

It was in that year that the Genius undertook a journey through Romagna, noting sketches and drawings of the architectures and structures present in some of the main Romagna cities: the Rocca of Cesena, the Fountain of Rimini, the Portocanale of Cesenatico, the Duomo of Faenza and finally the urban map of Imola.

Retracing the stages of Leonardo’s journey, Cantine Leonardo da Vinci has created a line of Romagna wines called 1502 Da Vinci in Romagna and dedicated to the typical grape varieties of this area of Italy: Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Pignoletto, produced following the precise indications of the Leonardo® Method, namely the winemaking production protocol branded by Cantine Leonardo da Vinci, which draws inspiration from Leonardo’s studies in the field of oenology.

After having browsed through the labels of the red Rocca di Cesena Sangiovese Superiore Riserva Romagna DOC and the white Duomo di Faenza Trebbiano Romagna DOC, now it is the turn of the bubbles: the Mappa di Imola Pignoletto DOC Spumante Brut.

Mappa di Imola: the map of the wine city

Leonardo arrives at Imola after having already visited the port town of Cesenatico and Faenza. After the lordship of the Sforza, in 1499 Cesare Borgia conquered Imola and Leonardo was tasked with planning improvements to the Rocca, the ancient defensive structure of the city. During his stay in Imola, Leonardo not only concerned himself with studying the fortification, but dedicated himself to the zenith representation of the urban map, inscribing the city area in a circle divided into eight sectors corresponding to the cardinal points. The city is thus divided into districts, the drawing defines the blocks, the individual buildings, the perimeter walls, the gates of the city and thus the extreme defensive bulwark of the Rocca.
All these details reported on the map are also found on the label of the Pignoletto Spumante Brut Mappa di Imola by Cantine Leonardo da Vinci.

Mappa di Imola: wine tasting

Mappa di Imola Pignoletto Spumante Brut is a Romagna sparkling wine obtained from a blend of 85% Pignoletto (Grechetto Gentile) and 15% Chardonnay. A sparkling wine with fine and delicate perlage, which tickles the palate. It presents itself in pale straw-yellow colour not too heavy, with greenish reflections. On the nose it results fresh and elegant, with intriguing notes of yellow plum and dog rose. Clean sip, of pleasant freshness with vegetable and bitter returns. Try it with gratinated scallops.
