Leonardo da Vinci and his Journey in Romagna: Discover the Duomo di Faenza Wine

Leonardo da Vinci e il viaggio in Romagna: scopri il vino Duomo di Faenza

In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci spent six months of his life in Romagna, commissioned by Cesare Borgia to study new systems of fortification and infrastructure to defend the possessions conquered by "Il Valentino" and to define the boundaries of the Duchy of Romagna.

During this mission in Romagna territory, the Genius touches some of the most significant cities, including Cesena, Rimini, Cesenatico, Imola and Faenza, noting in his travel notebooks the landscapes and architectural elements identifying these territories. Cantine Leonardo da Vinci honours Leonardo’s journey by featuring the various stages on the wine labels of the 1502 Da Vinci in Romagna collection: a line dedicated to wines from the finest Romagna vineyards produced following the guidelines of the Leonardo Method®, the Leonardo da Vinci Wine Cellar proprietary winemaking protocol, which draws inspiration precisely from Leonardo’s studies in the field of winemaking. If in a previous article we explored the meaning of the label of Rocca di Cesena Sangiovese Superiore Riserva Romagna DOC, we now look together at the drawing dedicated to the Duomo di Faenza Trebbiano Romagna DOC.

From Cathedral to Wine

Leonardo da Vinci's stop in Faenza falls between his departure from Cesenatico and his arrival in Imola. It is testified by the drawing itself in which the prospective plan of the route to enter the Rocca Malatestiana of Cesena is depicted. In the upper part of the sketch, in fact, Leonardo has drawn a Latin cross church very similar to the Duomo di Faenza in Piazza della Libertà: the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo. The wine inspired by this stage of Leonardo's journey is the homonymous "Duomo di Faenza" Trebbiano Romagna DOC.
